Store custom data on contacts

Features · Updated Aug 23, 2026

Add your own fields to contacts, like "VIP" or "Order issue", and fill them in from the inbox. Custom data lives on each contact so your team always has the context they need.

Create a custom field

You define fields once, and they appear on every contact.

  1. Go to Settings → Contact attributes.
  2. Type a Label for the field, for example "Review requested" or "Preferred size".
  3. Pick a Type:
    • Text for free-form notes
    • Number for amounts or counts
    • Yes / no for a simple flag
    • Date for a day, like a follow-up date
  4. Click Add attribute.

The type can't be changed after you create the field, so pick the right one up front.

Fill in a contact's custom data

Once you have fields, you set their values per contact from the inbox.

  1. Open the Inbox and select a conversation.
  2. In the sidebar on the right, find the Custom data section.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. Fill in the values for that contact and click Save.

Fields you haven't filled in show as Not set.

Rename or delete a field

You can rename a field at any time from Settings → Contact attributes. Renaming keeps every stored value.

Deleting a field removes it from your contacts, but the values you already saved are kept and hidden, so nothing is lost if you add the field back later.
