Hidden Optionize products in my Shopify admin
You may notice products in your Shopify admin that you didn't create, with handles starting with "optionize" or a product called "Optionize Exchange Rate Helper". These are helper products the app creates automatically. This article explains what they are and why you shouldn't delete them.
Why they exist
Shopify checkouts can only charge for real products. To charge add-on prices, Optionize creates hidden products (product type "add-on") behind the scenes. When a customer selects a paid option, the matching add-on product is added to their cart as a line item.
The "Optionize Exchange Rate Helper" product is different: it's used to read your store's currency conversion rates so add-on prices convert correctly for international customers. It's unlisted, carries no inventory, and can't be bought.
Will customers see them?
No, not in normal browsing:
- They're excluded from your online store listings and search.
- If someone opens an add-on product page directly, they're redirected to your home page (unless you enabled Allow direct access to add-on products in Settings).
- A checkout rule blocks add-on products from being purchased on their own, without a main product.
What happens if I delete them?
Deleting them breaks add-on pricing:
- Deleted add-on products mean selected paid options can't be added to the cart.
- Deleting the exchange rate helper makes multi-currency add-on prices fall back to a 1:1 conversion.
The app manages these products automatically, creating and cleaning them up as your option sets change. If you deleted some by accident, message us from the chat in the app and we'll restore them.
