What is Optionize?

Getting Started · Updated Jul 16, 2026

Optionize adds custom product options to your Shopify store, so customers can personalize products before adding them to the cart. This article gives you a quick tour of what the app can do.

Shopify's built-in variants stop at 3 option types. Optionize removes that ceiling: you can add text boxes, dropdowns, swatches, file uploads, date pickers, and many more, with no limit on how many options a product has.

How it works

  1. You build an option set, a group of options such as "Engraving text" or "Gift wrapping".
  2. You choose which products the option set applies to: all products, specific ones, or products matching conditions like collection or tag.
  3. The options appear on your product pages automatically. Customer choices are saved with the order, so you see exactly what they picked.

What you can build

  • Personalization fields: engraving text, custom messages, image uploads
  • Visual choices: color swatches, image swatches, button groups
  • Paid extras: gift wrapping, rush processing, warranties, add-on products (Pro)
  • Smart forms: options that show or hide based on earlier answers (Pro)

A Shopify product page with Optionize options: paid add-on checkboxes for engraving and coating, a required color swatch, gift wrap image swatches, and a paid priority delivery checkbox
